I recently had the honour of photographing the Bar Mitzvah of Keithen, the son of Laurelle and Larry at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue in Winnipeg. I first met Laurelle and Larry when they hired me to photograph their wedding a few years ago. While each had been married before (Larry has a three adult daughters while keithen is Laurelle’s only child) what was very unique about their situation was their backgrounds. Laurelle (who was raised Catholic) is a divorce lawyer and Larry is a Jewish Rabbi. There is also several years age difference between the two of them. They met through the process of Laurelle’s conversion to Judaism. While their backgrounds and stories would make them seem to be complete opposites “on paper”… ten minutes together with them is all it takes to realize how much of a perfect match for each other they really are.
The interesting thing is that Keithen made the decision himself to convert to Judaism as well as to go through the Bar Mitzvah process. This is the process in which a jewish male child becomes a man and takes on all responsibility for their own actions morally and ethically in accordance to jewish ritual Law and from then on they can participate fully in all areas of Jewish community life.
Below is a selection of images of Keithen’s Bar Mitzvah ceremony as well as the celebration following:
