For the 6th time, I was a finalist for the title of Manitoba’s Photographer of Year…. but not the winner.
Thankfully I’ve also won it twice otherwise all these dresses stacking up in the back of my closet would really tick me off! Actually, I take pride in consistently being named a finalist. For the last 3 consecutive years for instance I’ve either won the title or was a finalist. My goal is always to produce outstanding images for my clients, and since it’s my clients work that I enter into competition, knowing that I’m considered one of the top photographers in Manitoba year after year is something I take pride in. Photography is one of those areas where if you do not constantly push yourself to do better, you are actually sliding backwards. I’ve seen a lot of one hit wonders come by – they get one lucky photograph that gets an award or two and then their work never is recognized again. My goal is to always be near the top. The only way I can ever do that is to have a goal to create outstanding images for every client I photograph. Is ever image I create an award winner – of course not! However, it’s like the old Canadian hockey saying goes: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” So in the words of Red Green: “Until next time….keep your stick on the ice.”
