The World of Impact Photographic Design bio picture
  • The world of Impact Photographic Design

My name is Bruce Allen Hendricks MPA, F.Ph. CPP and I am the owner/principal photographer of Impact Photographic Design.  My work is primarily based around people photography – from children to families to weddings to promotional images for business people….with a little commercial and industrial photography also thrown in the mix.   As well, it’s always been my opinion that “pets are people too” and as such I’ve developed a pretty strong following because of my unique animal portraits.

I own the distinction of being the youngest Manitoban in history to be awarded the title of Masters of Photographic Arts (MPA) from the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC). In my continuing desire to be more creative and produce better images for my clients, I’ve been honoured with several industry degrees as well as a long list of other awards and accomplishments for my work.  All of which has led me to be to produce workshops/seminars/programs for other photographers, write numerous article for publications both inside and out of the industry as well as judge professional photographic competitions across the country.   If you are interested you can find a complete list of my awards/degrees, etc on my main website.

Besides being a photographer, I’m also an animal lover and have two cats that let me hang out with them (Oscar and Boots).  You’ll also find I have a pretty unique sense of humour as will be demonstrated throughout this blog as well as my Facebook page (Wanna be Friends?).  I’m a curler, a Blue Bomber fan, a movie buff, am near sighted (no blind photographer jokes!) and am scared of spiders!  Alright, I’m not thrilled with snakes either.

If you are interested in having me do work for you, contact me and we’ll set up a time to get together to discuss and design some outstanding images for you.  In the meantime chill out, relax and take a few minutes to check this site out. Hopefully you’ll love the work and want to come back often to check out what’s been going on lately!

Country Portraits

Meet Andrea and Brian. Though they live in Alberta now, they are originally from Manitoba and will be getting married in Minnedosa  in September.  We had scheduled both an engagement as well as family portrait for her family during one of their world wind tours back home (this time it was for their social).  So I drove out Friday and we spent several hours photographing, as well as discussing options for their wedding photographs.  Beside other options, they really wanted a signature album to use as a guest book at their wedding.  As I’m starting to work with an new album that is awesome for that purpose….me thinks that’ll be the way they end up going.

Here’s small sampling of some of the images we created on that hot and muggy day…..

Marlene Fast - These are fabulous, as usual! Great job.

Mensa Driving Exam

Monday night right after I was announced as the double winner of the Model in the House Competition, I had to leave quickly  because I had a portrait session to do. I  had a couple who had never had an portraits of the two of them done before, so we decided that we needed to do something a little extra special for them.     We started of doing some portraits at dusk,  but the majority of the images I created for them  were done after dark.  I used buildings logos signs as light sources, apartment door lights,  a flashlight – just different stuff to give them the funky style they were looking for.

For the last part of the session I drove them to a warehouse in the exchange area.  There were some stairs that I wanted to have them on and I was going to use my headlight on my SUV to light them for the  portrait.  Problem was…  my headlights lights were hitting them too low. Instead of standing on the stairs, I needed to have them sitting.  Even with that, I  needed to back-up my vehicle to raise the beams t to where I wanted the light.   So I look in my rear view mirror….nothing!  I look in my side mirrors…nothing!  I EVEN shoulder check both sides to be triple sure…there is NOTHING behind me…or so I thought!  I put my vehicle in reverse, and kinda rode the break back a couple feet until hear a “CRUNCH!”  “ That didn’t sound good!”  I said to myself.   As my window was open the couple who were still on the stairs as I placed them….. agreed with me.  So we all  heading to the back of my SUV to see what that sound was.  Well, for some  reason, some old rusty/yellow 18”ish piece of metal was sticking out of the ground directly behind my left tail light – just inside my vehicle body so there was no way I could have see it.  This thing was a one of a kind, as nowhere else anywhere within sight was there a another one.  It was as if sometime long, long,  ago somebody decided to remove a short metal guard rail, or fence of some sort, etc  …but decided to leave this one little piece of metal as a marker so future generations who came to that exact spot would realize that civilization had in fact been there before them.  Just my luck, some archaeologist wannabe –  in his infinite wisdom…. trashed my bumper!  In the words of Oscar from Corner Gas “what a Jackass!”

So instead of working on clients orders Thursday morning, I get to go see a MPIC adjuster about getting my bumper replaced.  Isn’t life fun??? :-)

A “Show me what you got!” Type Competition

I not only showed…but I won BIG!

The Professional Photographers Association of Manitoba had a challenge contest for its members.  You were given a location to show up to at a specific time. There you would meet a model who you had never met before.  You could only bring one camera and one lens.  Though other decided to take a zoom lens to offer themselves more flexibility, I took a 50MM fixed lens (in keeping with the spirit of the challenge).   You also had to tape over the LCD screen on your digital camera – having  to rely solely on your ability and technical knowledge.  You had a 20 minute window to meet your subject, scout out the areas where you wanted to photograph and to create no more than 14 exposures.

The contest was to demonstrate who could produce the best work under pressure.  Of the 14 images you had taken, you were to select 3.  Once could not have any artwork done to it what-so -ever (though you were allowed to adjust the overall  brightness/darkness  of the photograph.  The other 2 you were allowed to do as much or as little artwork to finish off the image as you see  fit.

For me, the image that I could not do any artwork on was an easy selection.  I had photographed one with that specifically in mind. The others were a hard choice. While I had accidently tripped the shutter 3 times in my haste (DOH – now I’m down to only  11 changes )  I had 3 images besides the un-retouched one I was torn between. Decisions, decisions,  after asking a couple people’s opinions, I finally decided on the following:

 1st photograph was entered  (un-retouched)
Which easily won for the best straight out of the camera image

2nd photograph was entered
Which also easily won for best overal image

3rd photograph  was a tough call – but was entered
Tied for 3rd best Overal Image

4th photograph
It was a very tough call, but I just decided not to enter it  (I really wanted to, but…… something has to go.  I was afraid the people judging wouldn’t understand and appreciate it.)
It was my favourite however!

Inge - Awesome stuff, as always Bruce! I really, really love the last one – the one you didn’t enter! But all of them are winners. You’re one hugely talented dude!!!

Protecting The Public From Bad Photographers!

The photographic industry has been undergoing huge changes the last few years.  With the influx of digital photography, and unexpected situation has occurred.  Some people have decided that without any real skill, talent, knowledge or ability they will jump into the industry to make a fast buck.  They are taking advantage of people who do not know what to look for when hiring a photographer.  Specifically, many young couples who are overwhelmed with the cost of putting on a wedding think they found a way to save a few dollars by hiring one of those unethical photographers.

The sad thing is, after the wedding is done, the food has  been eaten and the hangover is passed (hopefully) all you have left is your memories. I’ve seen so many brides crying because  they were completely disappointed with the horrible pictures they received.  They really have no memories of their special day.  The thing is, that is something that they will regret for the rest of their lives. The older they get, the more they regret their decision to not hire someone competent.   They have nothing to pass on to their children.

To counter act this, I’ve started a group that is dedicated to get the people entering the photographic industry to mandatorily get licenses and certified to even be in business That way, the public will be assured that no matter who they hire, they have at least met a minimal level of ability, skill talent and knowledge.  Of course there will still be a wide variety of skill levels out there – from Master Photographers on down, at least you will assured of that you will not be taken advantage of one of these unethical photographers.

I will soon also be announcing the launch of another blog that is dedicated to helping the buying public when it comes to selecting a photographer.  It will be a world-wide resource and not Impact Photographic Design specific.

Dedicated quality photographers word-wide are throwing their support behind this cause.  Stay tuned!

This group has been created as a voice for qualified photographers to speak up to governments and start regulating the photographic industry. Those that have dedicated themselves to continually improving their skill and knowledge so they can create better images for their clients while conducting business in an ethical manor are frustrated with the incredible influx of unskilled, untalented and unprofessional people entering the industry just to make a quick profit from the trusting public.

We demand governments start regulating and most importantly licensing the photographic industry to protect both the general public from being deceived and the industry in general. People in numerous professions have to meet knowledge and quality standards to be able to work in specific fields, and it’s about time governments start regulating the photographic industry for the protection of the buying public who are continually being taken advantage of.

The United Sates of America run a Certification Program and the members of this group want all governments to look at this model (in co-operation with the non-profit professional photographic association of that country – Example USA= PPA, Canada = PPOC, Australia = AIPP, etc) as a starting point in creating a system that licences photographers to be able to charge the buying public for their services. A minimal level of knowledge and expertise needs to be met to ensure the buying public is no longer being taken advantage of.

Wanted To Feel Beautiful Again…

Meet Michelle – she had seen my website on the net and loved my style!  (What great taste!  lol)
The thing is – between work and her son, it’s has been a long time since she did anything just for herself.  She recently lost a substantial amount of weight and decided she wanted to “treat herself to something to celebrate… something that made her feel beautiful again!”   As she hasn’t hit her target weight as of yet, she only wanted to do some head and shoulder portraits this time, a  semi-glamour style session.   I personally  thought she was being way too hard on herself, but I didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable and do full body images before she was ready to…. in her mind.  This is a small taste of the images I created for her.
